 Your tour will start with a few nights of discovering the Port town of Cochin before you take in the lush tea hills of Munnar. Travel further to Periyar, where you will stay in a resort near the wildlife park. Navigate the mesmerising backwaters of Kerala on a Houseboat cruise. This tour ends with a few nights of relaxation at a beautiful beach resort tucked away in a quaint fishermen’s village.

1 Cochin

Cochin, or Kochi as it is now called, is divided into Old Cochin (comprising Fort Cochin and Mattanchery) and Ernakulam, which is a bustling metropolis and is considered the commercial capital of Kerala. It is the only district in Kerala where you can experience urban comforts on a par with other major cities in India and also the history of many centuries bygone.

2 Munnar
Once the summer resort of the erstwhile British administration in South India it still retains its colonial charm and is famous for its tea plantations, most of which are privately owned. With its sprawling estates, rolling hills, sparkling waterfalls, picture postcard hamlets and undulating valleys, Munnar is an ideal get-away destination.

Detailed Itinerary

Day ONE +-
  • DAY 01 – Arrival Cochin

On arrival in Cochin, you will be welcomed by your Group Tour escort and transferred to your hotel. A special vehicle has been organised to ensure that the whole group can travel together comfortably.Kochi, as it is called now, offers you the best of history and culture anywhere in the state. A port town since early centuries Cochin attracted traders and invaders from the world over. One can see snippets of the different eras and influences in the many attractions in Cochin. Check into your hotel and relax and unwind.

 Your hotel is in the heart of the cultural part of Cochin. If you stepped out of the hotel you will find yourself within walking distance of other attractions like the Chinese fishing nets, said to have been left behind by Chinese traders in the 15th century.

 Enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise this evening. Overnight at the Fort House.

Day TWO +-
  • DAY 02 – Cochin

Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Cochin this morning, which will include - The Jewish Synagogue in what is locally called the Jew Town, St. Francis Church which is the oldest European Church in India, the Santa Cruz Basilica built in 1557 by the Portuguese, the Dutch Palace, the Spice market and the 15th century Chinese fishing nets believed to have been brought by Chinese traders.

 In the evening, visit an auditorium to watch the famous dance drama of Kerala, the Kathakali. This dance is characterised by some great story telling, amazing costumes and extensive make-up.

Day THREE +-
  • DAY 03 – Cochin – Munnar (135 Km / 3 ½ h)

This morning we will drive the group to Munnar- a hill station located 1600 meters above sea level. Once the summer resort of the erstwhile British administration in South India it still retains its colonial charm and is famous for its tea plantations, most of which are privately owned. With its sprawling estates, rolling hills, sparkling waterfalls, picture postcard hamlets and undulating valleys, Munnar is an ideal holiday destination.

 Check into your hotel and unwind. Rest of the day at leisure to enjoy the ambience of Munnar.

Day FOUR +-
  • DAY 04 – Munnar

Today you can enjoy a visit tea museum, take a short trip to the Eravikulam National Park (home to the endangered Nilgiri Thar mountain goat amongst others) or simply walk through the enchanting tea estates and enjoy the tranquillity it provides.

 Day at leisure. Overnight at the Ambady Estate.

Day FIVE +-
  • DAY 05 – Munnar – Periyar (110 Km / 4 h)

We drive you to Periyar this morning; an area known for its undulating hills, spice plantations, and elephant sightings. One of the 27 tiger reserves in India, the Periyar valley in Thekkady is the oldest. Check into your hotel.

Enjoy a spice plantation tour where you will be enticed by not only the aroma of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and nutmeg but will also get to know how they are grown, harvested and processed before they reach the supermarkets. It is also possible to go for an Elephant ride today.

 Overnight at the Cardamom County.

Day SIX +-
  • DAY 06 – Periyar

This morning an English-speaking guide will accompany the group on a 3-hour guided trek in the wildlife park.

This is a conservation-oriented3-hour trek, covering around 5 kilometers. The route takes you through undulating terrains. Altitudinal ranges of 900 meters to 1300 meters will be covered and trekkers obtain glimpses of the lofty escarpments bordering the park watershed and the vast plains down below. Gaur sloth bear, elephant etc. are often sighted along this route apart from birds and butterflies.

 Intensity Level of Nature Walks: High levels of fitness are not required to do this program. However, you need to be in general good health and used to walking.

 Later this evening, you can enjoy a boat ride in Periyar Lake. This is another opportunity to spot wildlife as they head to the lake for a drink.

Day SEVEN +-
  • DAY 07 – Periyar – Houseboat (135 Km / 3 ½ h)

Today the group travels to Allepey (also known as the “Venice of the east’) to embark on a houseboat and cruise the Backwaters, a splendid area full of canals, lakes and coves. Your houseboats or ‘Kettuvalloms’ are converted rice barges with well-appointed bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. You can sunbathe on the deck or observe the palm fringed landscape from your cabins. Apart from the mesmerizing surroundings it’s the life along the coast that adds a touch of exotica to this experience.

 

The locals’ travel in canoes and you will find vegetable sellers, fishermen and other traders bringing household goods, door to door in small wooden boats. As you cruise along the backwaters you can ask your captain to stop at villages, paddy fields and other places, enroute. Overnight on board. (Full Board)

Day EIGHT +-
  • DAY 08 – Alleppey – Marari (25 Km / ½ h)

You will disembark from your houseboat at Alleppey and be transferred to the picturesque fishermen’s village of Mararikulam. Check into your resort, which is tucked away inside quiet and lush coconut groves, set by the pristine white-sand beaches of Marari.

 Enjoy your day at leisure.

 Overnight at the Xandari Pearl.

Day NINE +-
  • DAY 09 – Marari

Catch the morning sun on the beach, as the fishermen bring in the first catch of the day. Enjoy some Yoga or meditation or simply enjoys the vistas the sea offers here.

 There is plenty to at the resort. You can ask the Chef to give you some handy cooking tips, get some bikes and ride along the coastal back roads or try the Ayurveda massage at the resort.

  • DAY 10 – Marari – Cochin – Departure(75 Km / 2 h)

When Should I go?

Being a coastal state surrounded by the Arabian Sea and because of its proximity to the equator, Kerala has a more or less consistent temperature pattern in the summers and the monsoons alike. The temperature hovers around 29°C throughout the year with varying levels of humidity.

Monsoon Months in Kerala

June and July are monsoon months in Kerala, the showers being heavy at first and then easing off gradually. Whilst these are not the best months for tours, interestingly, this happens to the best time for travellers seeking the therapeutic Ayurveda treatment which is said to be most effective in these months.

Best months for travel to Kerala

The months of October through to March are considered to be the most favourable months to travel to Kerala when the weather is sunny and pleasant. The months of April and May are also favourable for travel but the humidity tends to be comparatively higher. August and September are also good months for travel.
