1 Cochin

Cochin, or Kochi as it is now called, is divided into Old Cochin (comprising Fort Cochin and Mattanchery) and Ernakulam, which is a bustling metropolis and is considered the commercial capital of Kerala. It is the only district in Kerala where you can experience urban comforts on a par with other major cities in India and also the history of many centuries bygone.

2 Kothamangalam

Set in the the foothills of the Western Ghats mountain ranges, Kothamangalam is a town rich in spice plantations. The town provides easy access to the Elephant sanctuary situated nearby.

Located on the west coast and near the extreme south of the state, Thiruvananthapuram, otherwise known as Trivandrum, is the capital of Kerala.The British, during their rule, found the name to be too complicated and rechristened it ‘Trivandrum’.

Detailed Itinerary

Day ONE +-
  • DAY 01: Arrival Cochin
You'll be welcomed by a Kerala Travel Centre representative at the airport and transferred to your hotel. A port town since early centuries, Cochin, also known as the spice coast of India, attracted traders and invaders from the world over. Needless to say, Cochin offers you some fascinating snippets of history and culture. Relax and unwind at the hotel, and in the evening enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise.

Day TWO +-
  • DAY 02: Cochin

Go for a sightseeing tour to explore the many fascinating highlights of Cochin; including, the Jewish Synagogue; St. Francis Church, the oldest European Church in India; the Santa Cruz Basilica, which was built in 1557 by the Portuguese; the Dutch Palace; the Spice Market; and the 15th century Chinese fishing nets believed to have been brought by Chinese traders. In the evening, visit an auditorium to watch the famous, traditional dance drama of Kerala, the Kathakali. This dance is characterised by intricate storytelling, amazing costumes and extensive make-up.

Day THREE +-
  • DAY 03: Cochin – Kothamangalam (60 km / 1.5 hrs)
Drive to Kothamangalam and spend the afternoon exploring your century-old estate bungalow set in over 100 acres of multi-crop plantation. Apart from exploring the estate, you will visit the local bird sanctuary, and, in the evening, partake in cooking demonstrations of authentic Kerala cuisine.
Overnight at the Mundackal Estate Bungalow with full board and a vehicle at your disposal.
Day FOUR +-
  • DAY 04: Kothamangalam
In the morning, drive to the Kodanad elephant orphanage. You will get the opportunity to play with the elephants and can participate in their bathing and feeding. Elephant rides will also be possible. Relax the rest of the day.
Overnight at the Mundackal Estate Bungalow with full board and a vehicle at your disposal.
Day FIVE +-
  • DAY 05: Kothamangalam - Kumarakom (80 km / 2 hrs)
Drive to Kumarakom, the enchanting backwater region of Kerala, and check into your hotel. The labyrinthine network of rivers, canals, streams and lagoons which form the famed backwaters offer stunning views and is an ideal place to relax. Have a day of leisure.

Day SIX +-
  • DAY 06: Kumarakom
Enjoy a relaxing day at the resort with optional water activities like canoeing, water scooter rides, boat rides, etc.

Day SEVEN +-
  • DAY 07: Kumarakom - Houseboat
Embark on your private houseboat from your resort and cruise on the backwaters, a splendid area full of canals, lakes and coves. Your houseboats, or Kettuvalloms, are luxurious boats with well-appointed bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. You can sunbathe on the deck or observe the palm-fringed landscape from your cabins. Apart from the mesmerizing surroundings, it's the life along the coast that makes this a fascinating experience. The locals travel in canoes, and you will find vegetable sellers, fishermen and other traders bringing household goods door-to-door in small, wooden boats. As you cruise along the backwaters, you can ask your captain to stop at villages, paddy fields and other places en route. Overnight on board with full board and a vehicle for your transfer.
Day EIGHT +-
  • DAY 08: Alleppey - Kumarakom - Periyar (180 km / 4 hrs)
Drive to Periyar - an area known for its undulating hills, spice plantations and elephant sightings. One of the 27 tiger reserves in India, the Periyar valley in Thekkady is the oldest. Check into your hotel. Go on a spice plantation tour to be enticed by the aroma of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and nutmeg and learn how they are grown, harvested and processed before they reach the supermarkets.

Day NINE +-
  • DAY 09: Periyar
Go for an escorted jungle trek and try activities like bamboo rafting or go for a boat ride where you will have the opportunity to sight elephants and other animals along the bank.

  • DAY 10: Periyar - Kovalam (280 km / 6.5 hrs)
Drive to Kovalam, one of the most popular beaches in Kerala, and check into your hotel. Enjoy a day of leisure at the beach.

  • DAY 11: Kovalam
Enjoy a relaxing day on the beach.

Take an optional day excursion to Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala. Visit highlights like the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Horse Palace, Napier Museum and art gallery.

When Should I go?

Being a coastal state surrounded by the Arabian Sea and because of its proximity to the equator, Kerala has a more or less consistent temperature pattern in the summers and the monsoons alike. The temperature hovers around 29°C throughout the year with varying levels of humidity.

Monsoon Months in Kerala

June and July are monsoon months in Kerala, the showers being heavy at first and then easing off gradually. Whilst these are not the best months for tours, interestingly, this happens to the best time for travellers seeking the therapeutic Ayurveda treatment which is said to be most effective in these months.

Best months for travel to Kerala

The months of October through to March are considered to be the most favourable months to travel to Kerala when the weather is sunny and pleasant. The months of April and May are also favourable for travel but the humidity tends to be comparatively higher. August and September are also good months for travel.
