5 Cochin

6 Cochin International Airport, Nedumbassery

Cochin International Airport, Cochin (IATA: COK,ICAO, VOCI) is an international airport serving the city of Kochi, in the state of Kerala, India. Located at Nedumbassery, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of the city, Cochin International Airport is the first airport in India developed under a public-private-partnership (PPP) model and was funded by nearly 10,000 non-resident Indians from 30 countries

It is the busiest and largest airport in the state of  Kerala. As of 2019, the Cochin International Airport caters to 61.8% of the total air passenger movement in Kerala. It is also the fourth busiest airport in India in terms of international traffic and eighth busiest overall. In fiscal year 2018-19, the airport handled more than 10.2 million passengers with a total of 71,871 aircraft movements.The airport is a primary base for Air India Express operations which is also headquartered in the city.

The airport operates three passenger terminals and one cargo terminal. With over 150,000 square metres (1,614,587 sq ft) in area, the airport's Terminal 3 is one of the largest terminals in India.On 18 August 2015, Cochin International Airport became the world's first fully solar powered airport with the inauguration of a dedicated solar plant. On 26 July 2018, the airport was selected for the coveted Champion of the Earth award, the highest environmental honor instituted by the United Nations.

  • DAY 01: Arrival Trivandrum - Kovalam (25 km / 1 hr)
Greeted by an India Travel representative at the airport and drive to Kovalam, one of the most popular beach destinations in Kerala and check into your hotel. Kovalam consists of three adjacent crescent beaches separated by rocky headlands, of which the southernmost, Lighthouse Beach, is the most famous. The azure waters and favourable climate make Kovalam a favourite year-round destination for beach lovers. In the evening, enjoy a romantic massage with a bottle of champagne.

Enjoy a day of leisure on the beach or take a trip to Trivandrum to explore the fascinating city.

  • DAY 04: Kovalam - Houseboat (175 km / 3.5 hrs)
Embark on your private houseboat and cruise the backwaters, a splendid area full of canals, lakes and coves. Your houseboats, or Kettuvalloms, are luxurious boats with well-appointed bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. For this special occasion, we will deck the entire boat with flowers. You can sunbathe on the deck or observe the palm-fringed landscape from your cabins. Apart from the mesmerizing surroundings, it's the life along the coast that makes this a fascinating experience. The locals travel in canoes, and you will find vegetable sellers, fishermen and other traders bringing household goods door-to-door in small, wooden boats. As you cruise along the backwaters, ask your captain to stop at villages, paddy fields and other places en route. In the evening, enjoy a romantic candlelight dinner with champagne.

Disembark in the morning and drive to Periyar an area known for its undulating hills, spice plantations, and elephant sightings. One of the 27 tiger reserves in India, the Periyar valley in Thekkady is the oldest. Check into your hotel. In the evening you could go for a boat ride where you will have the opportunity to sight elephants and other animals along the bank. Overnight at the resort with a vehicle at your disposal.
Day SEVEN +-
  • DAY 07: Periyar
Spend the day at leisure in the stunning wildlife resort. Enjoy an elephant ride, walk through the plantations or simply enjoy a dip in the pool.

Go on a spice plantation tour today where you will be enticed by the aroma of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and nutmeg. Day of leisure in the resort.

Drive to Kumarakom, the enchanting backwater region of Kerala, and check into your hotel. The labyrinthine network of rivers, canals, streams and lagoons that form the famed backwaters offer stunning views and is an ideal place for a romantic getaway. Day of leisure.

A port town since early centuries, Cochin, also known as the spice coast of India, attracted traders and invaders from the world over. Needless to say, Cochin offers you some fascinating snippets of history and culture. Go for a sightseeing tour to explore the many fascinating highlights of Cochin; including, the Jewish Synagogue; St. Francis Church, the oldest European Church in India; the Santa Cruz Basilica, which was built in 1557 by the Portuguese; the Dutch Palace; the Spice Market; and the 15th century Chinese fishing nets believed to have been brought by Chinese traders. Relax and unwind at the hotel.

When Should I go?

Being a coastal state surrounded by the Arabian Sea and because of its proximity to the equator, Kerala has a more or less consistent temperature pattern in the summers and the monsoons alike. The temperature hovers around 29°C throughout the year with varying levels of humidity.

Monsoon Months in Kerala

June and July are monsoon months in Kerala, the showers being heavy at first and then easing off gradually. Whilst these are not the best months for tours, interestingly, this happens to the best time for travellers seeking the therapeutic Ayurveda treatment which is said to be most effective in these months.

Best months for travel to Kerala

The months of October through to March are considered to be the most favourable months to travel to Kerala when the weather is sunny and pleasant. The months of April and May are also favourable for travel but the humidity tends to be comparatively higher. August and September are also good months for travel.
