7 Cochin International Airport - Nedumbassery

Cochin International Airport, Cochin (IATA: COK,ICAO, VOCI) is an international airport serving the city of Kochi, in the state of Kerala, India. Located at Nedumbassery, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of the city, Cochin International Airport is the first airport in India developed under a public-private-partnership (PPP) model and was funded by nearly 10,000 non-resident Indians from 30 countries

It is the busiest and largest airport in the state of  Kerala. As of 2019, the Cochin International Airport caters to 61.8% of the total air passenger movement in Kerala. It is also the fourth busiest airport in India in terms of international traffic and eighth busiest overall. In fiscal year 2018-19, the airport handled more than 10.2 million passengers with a total of 71,871 aircraft movements.The airport is a primary base for Air India Express operations which is also headquartered in the city.

The airport operates three passenger terminals and one cargo terminal. With over 150,000 square metres (1,614,587 sq ft) in area, the airport's Terminal 3 is one of the largest terminals in India.On 18 August 2015, Cochin International Airport became the world's first fully solar powered airport with the inauguration of a dedicated solar plant. On 26 July 2018, the airport was selected for the coveted Champion of the Earth award, the highest environmental honor instituted by the United Nations.

Detailed Itinerary

Day ONE +-
  • DAY 01 – Arrival – Cochin

Welcomed by Globe Travel Centre representative at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Kochi, as it is called now, offers you the best of history and culture anywhere in the state. A port town since early centuries Cochin attracted traders and invaders from the world over. One can see snippets of the different eras and influences in the many attractions in Cochin. The place is broadly divided into two areas- Ernakulam which is a bustling cosmopolitan metropolis and Fort Cochin which is the cultural hub where the hotel is located. Step out of the hotel and you are within walking distance of other attractions like the Chinese fishing nets, said to have been left behind by Chinese traders in the 15th century.

 

Today evening you can go for a relaxing sunset cruise.

Day TWO +-
  • DAY 02 – Cochin

Today you can go for a sightseeing tour of Cochin which include - The Jewish Synagogue in what is locally called the Jew Town, St. Francis Church which is the oldest European Church in India, the Santa Cruz Basilica built in 1557 by the Portuguese, the Dutch Palace, the Spice market and the 15th century Chinese fishing nets believed to have been brought by Chinese traders.

 

In the evening, visit an auditorium to watch the famous dance drama of Kerala, the Kathakali. This dance is characterised by some great story telling, amazing costumes and extensive make-up.

Day THREE +-
  • DAY 03 – Cochin – Munnar (135 Km / 3 ½ h)

Drive to Munnar a hill station located 1600 meters above sea level. Once the summer resort of the erstwhile British administration in South India it still retains its colonial charm and is famous for its tea plantations, most of which are privately owned. With its sprawling estates, rolling hills, sparkling waterfalls, picture postcard hamlets and undulating valleys, Munnar is an ideal holiday destination.

 Check into your hotel and unwind. Rest of the day at leisure to enjoy the ambience of Munnar.

Day FOUR +-
  • DAY 04 – Munnar

Today you take a visit tea museum, take a short trip to the Eravikulam National Park (home to the endangered Nilgiri Thar mountain goat amongst others) or simply walk through the enchanting tea estates and enjoy the tranquillity it provides. Overnight at the Ragamaya Resort & Spa.

  • DAY 05 – Munnar – Periyar (110 Km / 4 h)

Drive to Periyar an area known for its undulating hills, spice plantations, and elephant sightings. One of the 27 tiger reserves in India, the Periyar valley in Thekkady is the oldest. Check into your hotel.

Go on a spice plantation tour today where you will be enticed by not only the aroma of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and nutmeg but will also get to know how they are grown, harvested and processed before they reach the supermarkets. It is also possible to go for an Elephant ride today. Overnight at the Cardamom County.

Day SIX +-
  • DAY 06 – Periyar

Half day escorted trekking in Periyar. This is a conservation-oriented hard trek taking up half a day, starting at 8am and ending at 11m, covering 05 km. The route passes through undulating terrains. Altitudinal ranges of 900 meters to 1300 meters will be covered and trekkers obtain glimpses of the lofty escarpments bordering the park watershed and the vast plains down below. Gaur sloth bear, elephant etc. are often sighted along this route apart from birds and butterflies. The trekkers will go with an English speaking guide. Vegetarian refreshments can be had en route.

 Today you can enjoy the boat ride in Periyar Lake. Periyar Lake was formed by the construction of the dam across the Mullaperiyar River in 1895. There is a good chance of seeing any of the inhabitants of the reserve on the lake; especially on the morning and late afternoon cruises where animals head for the lake to drink.

Day SEVEN +-
  • DAY 07 – Periyar – Kumarakom – Houseboat (135 Km / 3 ½ h)

Drive to Kumarakom boat jetty to embark on your private houseboat and cruise on the Backwaters, a splendid area full of canals, lakes and coves. Your houseboats or ‘Kettuvalloms’ are luxurious boats with well-appointed bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. You can sunbathe on the deck or observe the palm fringed landscape from your cabins. Apart from the mesmerizing surroundings it’s the life along the coast that adds a touch of exotica to this experience.

 

The locals’ travel in canoes and you will find vegetable sellers, fishermen and other traders bringing household goods, door to door in small wooden boats. As you cruise along the backwaters you can ask your captain to stop at villages, paddy fields and other places, enroute. Overnight on board. (Full Board)

  • DAY 08 – Alleppey – Kumarakom (By boat)

Disembark from your houseboat at Kumarakom, the enchanting backwater region of Kerala and check into your hotel. The labyrinthine network of rivers, canals, streams and lagoons, which form the famed backwaters offer stunning views, and is an ideal place to relax. Day at leisure.

 In the evening you can take a general ayurvedic full body massage.

When Should I go?

Being a coastal state surrounded by the Arabian Sea and because of its proximity to the equator, Kerala has a more or less consistent temperature pattern in the summers and the monsoons alike. The temperature hovers around 29°C throughout the year with varying levels of humidity.

Monsoon Months in Kerala

June and July are monsoon months in Kerala, the showers being heavy at first and then easing off gradually. Whilst these are not the best months for tours, interestingly, this happens to the best time for travellers seeking the therapeutic Ayurveda treatment which is said to be most effective in these months.

Best months for travel to Kerala

The months of October through to March are considered to be the most favourable months to travel to Kerala when the weather is sunny and pleasant. The months of April and May are also favourable for travel but the humidity tends to be comparatively higher. August and September are also good months for travel.

Xandari Harbour

The Xandari Harbour is a restored water-front property located in the heart of Fort Kochi's spice trading district, Mattanchery. Located on the historical ‘Bazaar road’ lined with art galleries, cafes and warehouses filled with spices, this small luxury hotel offers travellers the opportunity to experience history and the best vistas of the sea.

Xandari 51, the hotel's award-winning gourmet restaurant offers one of the best dining experiences in Fort Kochi.
