Fort Rampura stands in the Chambal ravines of Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh. Built more than 600 years ago and named for Raja Ramshaha, it began as a defensive fort with crenellated walls and a moat before later generations added its courtyards, Zenana quarters and stables.
The Kachawaha Rajput family has lived here for 14 generations. This is still a private family home rather than a conventional palace hotel, so stays unfold through lived-in rooms, inherited collections, generous home cooking and stories shared by the hosts.
Days can include fort walks, pottery and jaggery-making, cycling, birdwatching, ravine treks, village and bazaar visits, Chambal boat trips, stargazing and evenings of local folk music. It is a quiet, characterful stop for travellers exploring less-visited Bundelkhand.
