About this India itinerary

The alluring land of North East India is one of the most treasured and eco-friendly sites in the entire world. This isolated and mysterious land of natural abundance is still to be touched by the outside world. Calcutta is a city of wonderful architecture and history which contrasts with the national parks of Kaziranga, home to the one horned rhino, and Manas which sees few tourists and borders with Bhutan. The area abounds with Buddhist monasteries and it is also possible to visit one of the wettest places on earth, Cherapunjee.

Everything below is a sample. Our India team will stretch it, shorten it, swap the hotels up or down a category and build the days around what you actually want to do.

Where you'll visit

The city of Joy is also a city of contrasts. Once the capital of British India (and now the capital of the state of West Bengal), the city easily combines its 400 years old heritage with the pace of modernization.

Day by day

Your itinerary, day by day

Welcomed by an India Travel Centre representative at the Kolkata airport, you will be transferred to your hotel. Relax and unwind. Calcutta is a city of glaring contrasts. A curious blend of the old and the new it represents a mix of the East and the West; a graft of a European city imposed on an Asian landscape that gives it charm, confusion and excitement. Founded 300 years ago by the East India Company, this was the British capital of India until 1911. Today, you can see elegant but crumbling relics of the Raj, covered in moss and mildew. It is still the creative capital of India, producing fine art, music and drama and drawing the best performers and their fans. While here you must visit the Victoria Memorial, Calcutta's most imposing monument, opened by the Prince of Wales in 1921 and often called the "Taj Mahal" of the British Raj. Other fascinating sights include St. Paul's Cathedral and the Indian Museum, with one of the best collections of Indian art in the whole of the sub-continent. Overnight at the hotel. October to March, the sweet spot

Most of India is at its best from October to March, when the monsoon has cleared and the days are dry and warm. April to June is hot across the plains but ideal for the Himalaya, and the south-west monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain, deep green landscapes and the lowest prices of the year.
