CGH Visalam

Overview

Why stay at CGH Visalam

Visalam was built in 1939 as a gift from a Chettiar father to his daughter Vishalakshi, in the village of Kanadukathan in the heart of Chettinad. Fate decreed that the house was never lived in, and it stood quiet for decades before CGH Earth restored it as a small hotel, keeping the Art Deco lines, the pillared courtyards, the Athangudi floor tiles and the family photographs on the walls.

There are 15 rooms around the courtyards, a pool in the garden and one long dining table where Chettinad home cooking is served at set times. Days here are unhurried: a cooking session in the kitchen, a cycle ride past the merchant mansions of Kanadukathan, a visit to the Athangudi tile makers or the antique shops of Karaikudi, then coffee back on the verandah. The staff are largely women from the surrounding villages, trained and employed by the hotel.

Dining
