Overview
Chittoor Kottaram was the abode of an erstwhile king and now takes one guest or family at a time. It rests on the banks of quiet backwaters near Cochin and has stood through more than two centuries of history.
In the 19th century the Raja of Cochin built a palace near his ancestral Krishna temple, away from the bustle of the capital, to house the entourage that cared for him when he visited. That house is what you stay in, with cosy rooms, a personal staff and nobody else on the property.
Step out of the verandah on to dew-laden lawns with a cup of tea and you look across water lilies to the backwaters. A Brahminy kite circles overhead, a kingfisher drops to the water. In the evening a sunset cruise takes you past villages tucked into coconut groves, and you return at dusk to lawns studded with oil lamps.
Getting there. Chittoor Kottaram sits behind the Chittoor temple at Chittoor P.O., Cochin 682027, about 30 km from Cochin International Airport.
