Turn off the highway and the road unfolds past roadside tea stalls, vegetable vendors and quaint shops. The town fades behind you and the lane winds through villages, shaded by tropical fruit trees, until you reach the waterside and Hibiscus Villa.
It is a private pool villa on the edge of Vembanad Lake, tucked into an inland coastal village. Fishermen work the Chinese nets on the water, ducks glide past, country canoes trace slow lines across the surface. The villa runs largely on solar power and much of what appears on the table comes from the kitchen garden and the village around it.
