Lockhart Bungalow

Overview

Why stay at Lockhart Bungalow

Munnar was a summer retreat for the British and remains a retreat for the city weary, with a soothing climate and tea plantations that run to the horizon. Lockhart Bungalow sits in the middle of them, a piece of history in a good piece of geography.

CGH Earth, a pioneer of responsible tourism in India, runs the bungalow in partnership with Harrisons Malayalam. The Lockhart Estate was started in 1879, the first estate planted in the Munnar region, growing cinchona, then coffee, then tea. The house is one of three colonial-era bungalows on about 1,500 acres.

There are three well kept rooms with views over rolling hills and tea gardens, a full staff, and little to do beyond walking the estate, visiting the factory and letting the mist come in.

Getting there. Lockhart Bungalow stands on the Lockhart Estate at Munnar, about 1,500 acres of working tea plantation.
