The short answer
Spring, from late March to May, and autumn, from October to November, are the best times to visit Japan. Blossom and autumn colour are beautiful but busy. May and late September are quieter.
The short version
Late March and early April bring the blossom, and the crowds and rates that follow it. Book a year out if that is the trip you want.
November is the quieter equal: maple colour, dry air, and easier availability.
May, early June and late September are the value months, with settled weather and space in the best ryokan.
Japan through the year
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | March to May | Cherry blossom, mild weather, busy |
| Early summer | June to July | Rainy season in much of Japan, then heat |
| Summer | July to August | Hot and humid, festivals, good for the Alps |
| Autumn | October to November | Autumn colour, dry and clear |
| Winter | December to February | Cold, clear, snow in the north and mountains |
Planning around the blossom
Blossom times move each year and vary by region, starting in the south and moving north. Hotels in Kyoto fill very early. If blossom is your main reason to go, book well ahead and keep the plan a little flexible.
Our adviceIf you want the colour without the crowds, look at the second half of November in Kyoto, or early May for fresh green gardens.
Do not overlook winter
Winter brings clear skies, snow scenes in the mountains, hot springs and fewer visitors in the cities. It is also a great time for skiing in Hokkaido and the Alps.
