How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?

The short answer

Ten to fourteen nights is ideal for Sri Lanka. Ten covers the cultural triangle, the hill country, a national park and the south coast. Fourteen gives time to slow down or add the east or north.

The short version

Ten nights is the working minimum for the classic loop: cultural triangle, hill country, a national park and the south coast.

Fourteen lets you slow down, add Jaffna or the east, and spend a proper week by the sea.

Roads are slower than the map suggests. Three hours on paper is usually four.

What fits into each trip length

NightsWhat it covers
7Cultural triangle and Kandy, or hill country and the south coast
10Cultural triangle, Kandy, hill country, a safari and the south coast
14The classic route at a slower pace, plus more beach time
16 or moreAdd Jaffna in the north or the east coast

A sample ten night route

Two or three nights around Sigiriya and Dambulla for ancient sites. One or two nights in Kandy. Two nights in the tea country around Nuwara Eliya or Ella, with the train between them if timings work. One night near Yala or Udawalawe for a safari. Three nights on the south coast near Galle.

How the seasons change the route

Sri Lanka has two monsoons. The south and west coasts are best roughly from December to April. The east coast is best roughly from May to September. The cultural triangle and hill country work for much of the year. We plan which coast you finish on based on when you travel.

Our adviceBook the hill country train early. It is popular and seats sell out in busy months.
