The short answer
Yes. Kerala is one of the easiest parts of India for children. Drives are fairly short, food is mild if you ask, and people are very welcoming to families. Ten nights with a beach at the end suits most ages.
Why Kerala works for families
Kerala is one of the gentlest introductions to India for children. Distances are short, roads are good, and hosts are unfailingly warm with young travellers.
A night on a houseboat is usually the trip highlight. Add a spice garden walk, a Kathakali make-up demonstration and an afternoon learning to cook.
Build in beach time at the end. Two or three nights on the coast lets everyone stop moving before the flight home.
What works at each age
Under fives
Keep drives short and stays longer. Two centres plus a beach is plenty. A lakeside hotel with a pool is often easier than a houseboat, and you can still take a day cruise.
Five to twelve
This is the age when Kerala really works. Children enjoy the houseboat, spice gardens, cooking classes, tea estates, Kathakali make up and boat rides in Thekkady.
Teenagers
Add a bit more activity: cycling through villages, kayaking on quieter canals, walks in the hills around Munnar, and surf lessons at some beaches in season.
Things children enjoy most
A night on a houseboat, watching village life go past. Learning to cook a simple Kerala curry. Seeing how tea is made. Watching a Kathakali actor paint their face before a show. Canoeing on small canals. A morning boat ride at Periyar looking for wildlife.
Our adviceAsk for a two bedroom houseboat with a rail around the deck. We only book boats we know for families, and we brief the crew about the children.
Food, health and comfort
Kerala food can be mild if you ask. Most hotels serve plain rice, dosa, chapati, eggs, fruit and simple curries alongside spicier dishes. Drink bottled or filtered water, and use repellent at dusk, especially near the backwaters.
Speak to your GP or a travel clinic about vaccinations well before you go. Pack sun cream, hats, a light rain layer and something that covers shoulders and knees for temples.
How we plan family trips
We keep drives under four hours where we can, choose family rooms or connecting rooms, and use hotels with pools where it makes sense. We put a free afternoon in most days and end with three or four nights at the beach so everyone can rest before the flight.
Our Kerala office in Cochin has been planning trips for 20 years, and Globe Travel Centre has been trading since 2006. Our team in Cochin is available throughout your trip, which parents tell us makes a real difference.
