About this Vietnam itinerary

The short tour offers a wide range of options and variety of types of places to visit. Starting the tour in HCM City, you can enjoy the city tour, a journey through older and more recent history. This is the commerical capital of Vietnam with many shops to explore as well as a rich choice of restaurants from street food to expensive restaurants. The Mekong Delta is a much less afluent area where locals make their livings primarily in and around the Mekong River. You'll travel by small local boat and by road and bicycle to explore the region at the slower pace that is lived here. Slowing the pace even further, your tour finishes on the lovely Phu Quoc Island, an Island of sea, sun and beaches. This is the place to come to when you want some indulgence and time to kick back and relax. If you choose to do more than that, you can go walking along the long beach, hire a bicycle or motor bike and explore the island or go on a boat trip for snokelling or diving.

Where you'll visit

Prior to reunification of the country, Ho Chi Minh was previously known as Saigon and was the capital of South Vietnam. It is now the largest city in Vietnam and the commercial centre. The influence of the Americans is easy to see in the central area wth the wide streets and tall buildings. The city has some great restaurants and is the place to be if shopping is your thing. And when you have had your fill of shopping and eating, you can head for the historical sites. The most famous place to visit are the Cu Chi Tunnels where the Viet Cong from the North sprang surprise attacks on the southern troops. The tunnels were also used as a place to store things and to live for months at a time. You can also visit the Re-Unification Palace, the Cathedral and the Central Post Office that was built by Mr Eiffel of Paris and is still operating today. And if the Vietnam/ American war is an interest, you might choose to visit the Museum where there are many evokative photographs and memorabilia on display.

October to April, the sweet spot

The north has a cool, damp winter and a hot, wet summer, so October to April is the pick for Ha Noi, Sa Pa and Ha Long Bay. The centre around Hue and Hoi An is driest from February to August. The south stays warm all year and is at its best from December to April.
