Why stay at Cranganor History Cafe & Riverside Chateau
Cranganor sits on the banks of the River Periyar at Malavana, Puthenvelikkara, looking across to the uninhabited island of Dharma Thuruth. It is inside the Muziris Heritage Project area, around the ancient port that once traded with Rome, Greece, Arabia and China. The land was once the home of Shangoonny Menon, Diwan Peshkar of Travancore and author of The History of Travancore.
Rasmi and Vineeth moved to Kerala with their daughters in 2017 and run the property with a team that is mostly women. The double-storey building follows the Indo-Dutch style of Kerala architecture, with colonnaded verandahs and long river views from inside and out.
There are ten rooms. Three River Meadow rooms sit on the riverside lawns with king-size beds and colonial furniture. Two River Panorama rooms on the first floor have views of the river all round. Five Riverside Pool Deck rooms overlook the 20 metre infinity pool at the river's edge.
The History Cafe cooks meals from scratch, using river catch such as prawn, pearl spot and mullet along with Kerala recipes shaped by centuries of trade. Breakfast is included. Afterwards the yard keepers can walk you through the garden's jackfruit, nutmeg, cashew, mango and allspice trees.
Days can include the Muziris heritage trail to the Paliam manor, old synagogues, the Cheraman mosque and weaving villages, yoga, kayaking, river cruises, cycling and fishing. The property is about 20 km from Kochi International Airport and 25 km from Kochi city.
