Why stay at The Malabar House
An 18th-century Dutch colonial residence converted into a small heritage hotel, The Malabar House sits in the historic centre of Fort Cochin, opposite St Francis Church and a short walk from the Chinese fishing nets. The house keeps its calm spaciousness, with antiques, contemporary Indian art and carved wooden details giving it the feel of a personal art hotel.
The 17 rooms are individually styled as Deluxe Rooms, Roof Garden Suites and the Malabar Suite, with stone floors, vivid colour schemes, large bathrooms and verandas, terraces or private garden sit-outs. The Malabar Suite is a peaceful maisonette with a sitting room, upstairs bedroom, bathroom and private terrace.
Malabar Junction combines Keralan cooking with Mediterranean influences, often using local and organic produce, with music or dance performances on the patio in season. Divine adds a wine lounge, tapas bar and art space, while Purespa offers Ayurveda massage and wellness treatments.

- Santa Cruz Basilica
Elegant reconstructed 1880s Catholic church originally built by the Portuguese in the 1500s.
- Dutch Palace (Mattancherry Palace)
Built by the Portuguese in 1557 as a gift to the ruler of Kochi, the palace was renovated by the Dutch in 1663 and oddly is named after the Dutch.
- St. Francis Church
Built in 1503 by the Portuguese, this is India’s oldest European church. Vasco Da Gama was buried here in 1524 before his remains were moved to Portugal. The tombstone still remains.
- Chinese Fishing Nets
These huge 15th century cantilevered fishing nets are the legacy of Chinese traders. These nets are set up on teak wood and bamboo poles and you can watch the nets being lowered by the fishermen from the Vasco Da Gama square along the beach.
