The short answer
The best time to visit Kerala is October to March, when the weather is warm, dry and sunny. June and July bring the heaviest monsoon rains, quiet and green, and the traditional season for Ayurveda. April and May are hot and humid.
October to March: the peak season
Kerala sits on India's south western tip, close to the equator and hugged by the Arabian Sea, so it stays warm all year, with daytime temperatures around 29C whenever you visit. What really changes through the year is the rain.
October to March is the classic window and, for most travellers, the best. The monsoon has cleared, leaving the landscape green but the skies dry and bright. It suits combining the backwaters, the hill country and the beaches without rain disrupting your plans. It is also the busiest and priciest stretch: Onam in August and September and the Christmas and New Year weeks book up especially early.
Is the monsoon (June to September) a good time to go?
The south west monsoon arrives in June, with the heaviest rain in June and July. It is not the washout many imagine. Showers are often intense but short, the countryside is at its most lush, and both crowds and prices fall away. August and September ease off and can be a lovely, quieter time to travel.
Local tipIf you are coming for Ayurveda or a wellness retreat, the monsoon is deliberately the right time, not a compromise. Just pace sightseeing gently around the rain.
What are April and May like?
The pre monsoon months are the hottest, with rising humidity that can make touring tiring. Beaches and hill stations like Munnar stay pleasant, so a shorter, more relaxed trip still works, but a full backwaters and cities itinerary is more comfortable in the drier months.
