Fort Kochi: what to see and do

Fishing boats and Chinese fishing nets along the Fort Kochi waterfront

The short answer

Fort Kochi is the historic heart of Kochi (Cochin), on a peninsula across the harbour from the modern city. Spend two nights to walk its old streets, see the Chinese fishing nets, visit Mattancherry's spice warehouses and synagogue, and watch a Kathakali performance.

Kochi, Cochin and Fort Kochi: what is the difference?

Kochi and Cochin are the same city. Ernakulam is the modern centre on the mainland. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are the old quarters on the peninsula, and they are where visitors stay. Our own office is in Cochin.

What to see in Fort Kochi

Chinese fishing nets

The large cantilevered nets along the shore are worked by teams of fishermen. Early morning and sunset are the best times.

Mattancherry and Jew Town

Old spice warehouses, antique shops, the Paradesi Synagogue and the Mattancherry Palace with its murals. Check opening days before you go, as some sites close on Fridays or Saturdays.

St Francis Church and the old streets

Walk or cycle the lanes of colonial houses, cafes and galleries.

Kathakali

Short evening performances aimed at visitors let you watch the make up being applied before the show.

How long to stay

Two nights is right for most people. It gives you a full day to explore and an evening for a performance and dinner.

Local tipStay in Fort Kochi itself rather than Ernakulam. Everything is walkable and the atmosphere is much better.
