The short answer

Thekkady is a small town at the edge of Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala's hills. Visitors come for boat trips on Periyar Lake, guided forest walks and the spice gardens around Kumily. Elephants, bison, deer and birds are common sightings; tigers are rarely seen. Two nights is enough.

What can you see in Periyar?

Periyar is a tiger reserve, but its forest is dense and tigers are seldom seen. Realistic sightings include elephant, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, wild boar, monkeys and many birds. Go for the forest and the experience rather than a tiger.

Things to do in Thekkady

Boat trip on Periyar Lake

Run by the park, with set departures. The early boat is usually the best for wildlife.

Guided walks and bamboo rafting

Run with local guides inside the reserve. Places are limited, so book ahead.

Spice gardens

See cardamom, pepper, vanilla and clove growing, and visit a family plantation.

How long and when

Two nights works well. The dry months, roughly December to April, are best for wildlife as animals gather near water.

Local tipThekkady is about three hours from Munnar and four from Kochi, so it sits naturally between the tea hills and the backwaters.

Where to stay in Thekkady

Most hotels are around the town of Kumily, near the park entrance. The best stays are in gardens or spice plantations on the edge of town, with cottages under trees. Some estates a little further away offer more quiet and plantation walks. A few rooms are available inside the reserve, but they are limited and book quickly.

A two night plan

Day one: arrive in the afternoon and visit a spice garden, then watch a short Kalaripayattu or Kathakali performance in the evening if you like. Day two: take the early boat on the lake or a guided walk in the forest, rest at midday, and spend the afternoon on a plantation walk or a cooking class. Day three: leave for the backwaters or Munnar.

Our honest view of Periyar

We tell clients clearly that Periyar is not a tiger safari. If seeing a tiger is the goal, other parks in India are a better choice and we can plan those too. Periyar is about the forest, the lake, elephants and birds, and the spice country around it. Visitors who come with that in mind usually love it.
