Costa Rica packs an unusual amount into a small country. Volcanoes with hot springs at their feet, cloud forest that drips all morning, canals full of caiman and turtles on the Caribbean side, and empty Pacific beaches at the end of the road.
A quarter of the land is protected, and the wildlife is the point. Sloths and toucans, scarlet macaws over the Osa peninsula, humpbacks off the coast in season, and a guide with a scope who will find things you would walk straight past.
