About this Japan itinerary

Japan is one of the easiest countries in the world to travel with children: safe, spotlessly clean, endlessly interesting and full of food that even fussy eaters enjoy.

This route mixes the things adults come for with things children remember, and keeps the travel days short by using the bullet train network.

Trip highlights

  • A family bike tour of Tokyo and a morning at a sumo stable
  • Science museums, robots and manga at Odaiba, and the world of Studio Ghibli
  • The Peace Memorial in Hiroshima and the floating torii and tame deer of Miyajima
  • Ninja training and a taiko drumming lesson in Kyoto
  • The giant bronze Buddha at Nara and its deer park
  • A ryokan night in Hakone with tatami rooms, onsen and kaiseki dinner

March to May and October to November, the sweet spot

Japan runs the length of several climate zones. Spring and autumn are the pick almost everywhere, with warm days and low rainfall. June brings the rainy season to most of the country, and July and August are hot and humid in the cities. Winter is cold and snowy in the north but crisp and clear in Tokyo and Kyoto.
