About this Japan itinerary

Hokkaido is the wild edge of Japan: volcanoes, lakes, forest that runs to the sea and animals you will not see further south.

You drive yourself, which is easy here, with roads that are quiet and well signed, and stay in a mix of small hotels and onsen inns. Our team plans the route, the stops and the wildlife timings around what you most want to see.

Trip highlights

  • Red-crowned cranes and the wetlands of Akan-ko National Park
  • The wild Shiretoko peninsula, a UNESCO site where brown bears live along the coast
  • Ainu culture and craft in the villages of eastern Hokkaido
  • Gorge walks at Sounkyo and the ropeway up Asahidake, Hokkaido's highest mountain
  • The rolling flower fields and patchwork farmland of Biei and Furano
  • Sapporo's markets, beer halls and Hokkaido seafood at the end of the drive

March to May and October to November, the sweet spot

Japan runs the length of several climate zones. Spring and autumn are the pick almost everywhere, with warm days and low rainfall. June brings the rainy season to most of the country, and July and August are hot and humid in the cities. Winter is cold and snowy in the north but crisp and clear in Tokyo and Kyoto.
