The short answer

Kerala's three main beach areas are Marari near Kochi for quiet village calm, Varkala for clifftop cafes, and Kovalam near Thiruvananthapuram for resorts and Ayurveda. Beach season runs from November to March. During the monsoon the sea is rough and not safe for swimming.

Which Kerala beach is best?

Marari

A long beach by fishing villages, about an hour from Kochi and close to the backwaters. Very quiet, with homestays and low key resorts.

Varkala

Red cliffs above the sea, lined with cafes and guesthouses. More sociable.

Kovalam

Crescent bays around a lighthouse, with larger hotels and Ayurveda resorts nearby.

When is beach season?

November to March gives calm seas and sunshine. April and May are hot. From June the monsoon brings big waves, and many beach hotels offer Ayurveda instead.

Sea safetySwim only where lifeguards are on duty and respect red flags. Kerala's currents are stronger than they look.

Each beach in more detail

Marari

Marari is a working fishing coast, with boats pulled up on the sand and very little development. Most hotels are set back among coconut palms. There is not much to do, which is why people love it. It is easy to reach from the backwaters, so it is our usual choice for a final beach stay on a classic route.

Varkala

At Varkala the cliff path is lined with cafes, shops and yoga studios, with steps down to the beach below. It is livelier than Marari and suits travellers who like to walk out for dinner. The sea can be rough, so swim where the lifeguards say it is safe.

Kovalam

Kovalam has a lighthouse beach busy with domestic visitors and quieter coves either side, where most of the better resorts are. Many Ayurveda resorts are on this stretch of coast. It is close to Thiruvananthapuram airport, which makes it easy to end a trip here.

North Kerala

Beaches near Kannur and Kasaragod are long and empty, with a few homestays and small resorts. They suit travellers combining the beach with theyyam, or anyone who wants to be far from other visitors.

How we help clients choose

We ask three questions: do you want to walk to restaurants or stay in your hotel, how important is swimming, and where are you flying home from. The answers usually point clearly to one beach. We also look at the date, because the start and end of the season can vary from year to year.

From our Cochin officeOn a two week trip, put four or five nights on the beach at the end. Shorter beach stays tend to feel like one more transfer.
