The short answer
Varkala is a beach town in south Kerala built along red laterite cliffs above the Arabian Sea. It has a relaxed, sociable feel with cafes and small hotels along the cliff path. It is about an hour from Thiruvananthapuram airport and best from November to March.
What is Varkala like?
The North Cliff is lined with cafes, yoga studios and guesthouses, with steps down to the sand. Papanasam beach below is also a place of Hindu pilgrimage, close to the old Janardhana Swamy temple, so dress modestly away from the sunbeds.
Varkala suits independent travellers, couples and anyone who likes a bit of life in the evening. If you want total quiet, Marari is a better match.
Is it safe to swim at Varkala?
The sea can be strong, with currents even on calm looking days. Swim only between the flags when lifeguards are on duty, and stay out of the water during the monsoon.
Local tipThe quieter beaches to the north of the cliff are lovely for a morning walk before the heat.
Varkala, Kovalam or Marari?

|---|---|---|
| Varkala | Clifftop cafes, sociable | Couples, independent travellers |
| Kovalam | Resort town, lighthouse | Ayurveda resorts, ending a south tour |
| Marari | Fishing village, very quiet | Rest, families, near Kochi |
