About this Africa itinerary

The migration is unpredictable by nature, so this trip is built around flexibility rather than a fixed schedule. Your guide is in daily contact with the other guides in the Mara and takes you where the herds actually are.

Starting in a private conservancy means quiet game viewing with only a handful of vehicles, and it buys you walking and night drives that are not permitted in the national reserve.

Trip highlights

  • River crossings on the Mara and Talek between late July and October
  • Night drives and walking safaris, which are only allowed in the conservancies
  • A small camp of eight tents inside the reserve, close to the crossing points
  • Optional dawn balloon flight over the herds

June to October and January to March, the sweet spot

Kenya sits on the equator, so it is warm all year and the seasons are about rain rather than temperature. The long rains fall from late March to May and the short rains in November, both of which bring green plains and very few vehicles. June to October is the driest stretch and the classic safari window, with the migration in the Mara from late July to October.
