About this Africa itinerary

Walking changes the scale of a safari. You stop counting species and start reading tracks, dung, broken branches and wind direction, with a guide who grew up doing it.

You do not need to be an athlete. Mornings are cool, distances are modest, and the vehicle is never far away if you would rather ride for a stretch.

Trip highlights

  • Walking the lava flows and green hills of the Chyulus with Kilimanjaro in view
  • A night fly camping under mosquito nets with nothing between you and the plains
  • Tracking black rhino on foot with Laikipiak rangers
  • Riding, night drives and a last two nights of big cat viewing in the Mara

June to October and January to March, the sweet spot

Kenya sits on the equator, so it is warm all year and the seasons are about rain rather than temperature. The long rains fall from late March to May and the short rains in November, both of which bring green plains and very few vehicles. June to October is the driest stretch and the classic safari window, with the migration in the Mara from late July to October.
