About this Africa itinerary

Most Kenya safaris show you the animals and wave at the people from the vehicle. This one gives the communities equal billing, without turning anybody into a photo opportunity.

Every cultural stop on this route is community owned and community run, so the money you spend stays with the families who host you. Our Nairobi team have worked with all of them for years.

Trip highlights

  • Tracking the northern species in Samburu: grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk
  • A morning with the rhino keepers and anti-poaching dogs on Ol Pejeta
  • Two nights with a Maasai family in the Loita hills, walking with their herds
  • Three nights of classic game viewing to finish, in the Masai Mara

June to October and January to March, the sweet spot

Kenya sits on the equator, so it is warm all year and the seasons are about rain rather than temperature. The long rains fall from late March to May and the short rains in November, both of which bring green plains and very few vehicles. June to October is the driest stretch and the classic safari window, with the migration in the Mara from late July to October.
